1. Clear your traffic fines and Salik balance
Outstanding Dubai Police fines and unpaid Salik tolls will block the renewal outright. Check and settle both through the RTA website, the Dubai Drive app or the Dubai Police channels before you start — the renewal screen will simply refuse to advance until the balance is zero.

Straight answer: choose comprehensive if the car is financed or worth more than about AED 30,000, and third-party only if the vehicle is old enough that you would not repair it after a serious accident.
3. Pass the technical inspection if your car is over 3 years old
Vehicles more than three years old must pass a technical inspection before renewal. Cars bought new from an authorised dealer are exempt for their first three years. The test takes about 15 minutes and covers brakes, tyres, suspension, lights, emissions and general body condition.
The result is transmitted electronically to the RTA, so you never need to carry a paper certificate to the renewal. The certificate remains valid for 30 days, which is the window you have to complete the renewal once you have passed.
